As of March 2025 the 11-inch iPad Air has an M3 processor that is powerful and energy-efficient (you may remember it from its widely praised performance in the Mac). The M3 pushes the iPad Air far ahead of the iPad mini and standard iPads with their A-series chips. The M3 also makes the Air an appealing alternative to the more expensive iPad Pro models, with their faster M4 processors.

Like all recent iPads, the Air features an all-screen design with no Home button. As with the standard iPad and the iPad mini, biometric security is handled by a fingerprint sensor in the power button rather than Face ID, which is reserved for the Pros. It has superb cameras (the front-facing 12MP camera and Center Stage), supports a wide range of Pro accessories, and now features 5G.

Pros: Beautiful design. Superb processing and graphics power. Cheaper than the iPad Pro.

Cons: Screen doesn’t feature ProMotion.

Ideal for: Tablet gamers and anyone who wants to be able to run the most demanding apps now and in the future. Pro users (business, creative, design) who can’t afford an iPad Pro.

Is now a good time to buy? Absolutely. It was updated in March of 2025 and will be around for a while. But would the iPad Pro be better? Read: iPad Air vs iPad Pro, or look below.

This generation of iPad mini launched in October 2024 and is available in four colors: Blue, Purple, Space Gray, and Starlight.

The biggest draw of the iPad mini is probably its diminutive stature; with its 8.3-inch display it’s Apple’s smallest iPad. It’s perfect for carrying around in a bag or handing to children when they need entertainment.

It might be small, but it is actually more powerful than the standard iPad thanks to its A17 Pro processor, which is a few generations newer than the A14 in the 10th gen iPad and supports Apple Intelligence. You also get a Liquid Retina screen, and 12MP/12MP rear/front cameras.

Pros: Very portable and respectably powerful. The cheapest version now has a decent amount of storage (128GB, previously only 64GB). Supports Apple Pencil (USB-C) or Apple Pencil Pro.

Cons: Small screen, which may not be great for those who get eyestrain or who like immersive films and games.

Best for: The portability-conscious. Gamers on the go. Tablet photographers. Ebook readers. Kids.

Is now a good time to buy? The iPad mini (A17 Pro) was released in October 2024 and an update isn’t expected until mid to late 2026. You’ll likely find it for a little bit lower than Apple’s MSRP at third-party retailers.

The 2025 iPad (A16) is the cheapest iPad at just $349/£329. It offers a lot of features for the price and it’s available in an assortment of fun colors. It has a 11-inch screen, a USB-C connector, and supports the Apple Pencil 1 or the Apple Pencil (USB). It’s also capable of 5G.

Pros: Good price especially now it starts with 128GB storage.

Cons: Apple picked an A16 chip for this iPad despite the A16 not supporting Apple Intelligence. This is likely to mean it will missing out on features. Still feels cheap due to the unlaminated screen (will Apple ever update this?). Not as thin and light as the iPad Air, or the iPad Pro for that matter.

Best for: Anyone who needs a big screen (not a huge screen; they’ll want the 13-inch iPad Air (or iPad Pro) but is on a budget, and can cope without the latest in processing. It’s a good option for anyone who likes the look of the iPad Air, but not the price.

Is now a good time to buy? Apple is unlikely to update this model until mid to late 2026. If you can wait until then we recommend you do though, because the A16 iPad doesn’t support Apple Intelligence features. If you want the cheapest iPad it’s a good deal, but it might be better to pay a little more for the iPad Air if you can afford to.

If you want a larger screen, there’s also a 13-inch iPad Air with an M3 processor, making it a viable alternative to the more expensive 13-inch iPad Pro with its M4 chip.

Aside from the bigger screen this iPad Air is identical to the 11-inch iPad Air, with the same all-screen design, fingerprint sensor in the power button and front-facing 12MP camera with Center Stage.

Pros: Large screen. Cheaper than the iPad Pro.

Ideal for: Anyone who want a bigger screen at a lower price than the iPad Pro. It’s a great size for watching films and TV shows (and offers quad-speaker audio to match). Pro users who can’t afford an iPad Pro.

Is now a good time to buy? This iPad Air was introduced in March 2025 and will be around for a while. If you want a big screen and don’t need, or can’t afford, an iPad Pro it’s a great choice.

The current generation of iPad Pro models launched in October 2025.

The iPad Pro comes in two sizes and a variety of capacities all the way up to a massive 2TB. The 2025 Pros feature M5 chips and are incredibly powerful–some might say more powerful than it has any right to be.

The 11-inch iPad Pro features a display it calls Ultra Retina XDR, which is an implementation of OLED technology that offers deeper blacks, better details in shadows and low light, and better response to motion. Apple uses two OLED panels in an implementation it calls Tandem OLED to address the brightness concerns of a single OLED panel. The Tandem OLED generates 1000 nits of SDR/HDR brightness and 1600 nits of peak HDR brightness. The display on the iPad Pro differs from the other iPads because it features ProMotion, which means it can automatically vary its refresh rate from 10Hz to 120Hz, which ensures exceptionally smooth on-screen motion.

With the launch of the M4 generation in 2024, the front-facing camera moved to the longer side of the iPad Pro for better use in landscape mode. The M5 and M4 iPad Pro also lack the rear 10MP ultra-wide camera that was on the 4th generation. Apple must have concluded that people don’t use the iPad Pro for photography – scanning however, is provided for: the 12MP main camera uses some AI tricks for scanning.

Pros: Slim and light (even slimmer than the iPad Air!); dual cameras; Face ID; quick and power-efficient processor.

Cons: Very expensive. Its power could be overkill for many.

Ideal for: Creative types who don’t need the absolutely largest screen. It’s great for watching films and TV shows (and offers quad-speaker audio to match), but there are other screens in the range that are a similar size and a lot more affordable.

Is now a good time to buy? The 11-inch M5 iPad Pro was released in October 2025 so it’s unlikely to be updated again until 2027.

The iPad Pro 13-inch, updated in October 2025, squeezes a huge screen into a relatively small and very thin chassis. The screen is fractionally larger than the iPad Air (2,064 pixels across compared to 2,048 pixels). It’s also fractionally bigger, but not heavier, than the 13-inch iPad Air.

In other respects it’s largely the same as the 11-inch Pro (above): with the same, super-fast processor (the M5), lots of RAM, ProMotion screen, and a user experience that looks more than capable of replacing a laptop.

The 13-inch iPad Pro, like the 11-inch version, has an Ultra Retina XDR. This is based on OLED technology, but Apple uses two OLED panels–it calls Tandem OLED and it generates 1000 nits of SDR/HDR brightness and 1600 nits of peak HDR brightness.

This is all thoroughly impressive. But on the downside, the 13-inch Pro is far less portable than the mid-size iPads (it remains admirably slim, but the sheer screen area makes it a handful) and ruinously expensive, particularly at those upper storage tiers.

Pros: Large screen (13-inch); extremely fast processor with lots of RAM; landscape camera with Face ID; four speakers; Ultra Retina display.

Cons: Very slim, but not as portable as the smaller models; very expensive; processor speed will be overkill for many prospective buyers.

Ideal for: Creative types most of all, but anyone who needs a big screen will be interested. Gamers and those who enjoy consuming media on the go will like the combination of a sumptuous screen and a quad-speaker audio system.

Is now a good time to buy? The current Pros came out in October 2025. Apple isn’t expected to update it until 2027.

This simple, rigid iPhone 17 protective case from Apple is thin and light. By design, clear cases shouldn’t disguise the color of your iPhone that you chose when you purchased it.

The Apple Clear Case is made from a blend of optically clear polycarbonate and other flexible materials, with a scratch-resistant coating on both the inside and outside. While it’s more protective than silicone cases and features a robust-looking 2mm camera lip, you can find tougher cases, which we have reviewed below.

While the Clear Case for the basic iPhone 17 is as you’d expect, Apple has somewhat ruined the idea of a “clear” case for its Pro and Pro Mac versions of the iPhone 17, which feature a slab of white plastic at the back under the camera area. It’s white whatever color of iPhone 17 Pro or Max that you own.

This is because Apple added its second-generation Ceramic Shield glass as a separate panel on the back of the Pro models—it’s on only the front of all the 17 family. To keep the back design visually balanced, the Apple logo was repositioned slightly lower. The white slab on Apple’s clear case is related to this adjustment and the alignment of the MagSafe magnets. Customers are already complaining that Apple should have created cases with a block in the color of the phone. If your iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max is orange or deep blue that slab of white is, well I’ll say it, ugly.

The bottom of the Clear Case is nearly fully open, which reduces the level protection.

For the iPhone Air Apple has another not really clear solution: the iPhone Air Bumper. This protects the edges of the phone and matches the Air’s color but leaves the back exposed. With a raised bezel it will also stop the screen touching the surface when laid flat. You can choose the bumper color to match your iPhone Air or select another color if you are feeling adventurous.

Apple also sells the iPhone Air Case with MagSafe in Frost or Shadow, with a 0.9mm back panel that’s reinforced with a polycarbonate frame. The inside is lightly frosted, while the exterior is finished to a high gloss.

At 29g it’s super light, and while the rigid case adds a little bulk, it’s worth a little compromise for that layer of protection. All materials and coatings are optimized to prevent yellowing over time.

There are also cheaper clear cases, which we have also tested for you. But the Apple badge is a sure sign of quality, as you’d expect.

If you want see-through protection for your new iPhone 17 ESR’s Classic Hybrid Case—with 1.5mm back—features shock-absorbing Air Guard corners that can protect from drops up to 11ft. ESR claims its clear plastic resists yellowing for longer than cheaper cases.

ESR also makes a version of the clear Classic Hybrid Case that features a handy built-in kickstand for stable viewing. The $25.99 ESR Classic Hybrid Magnetic Case with Stash Stand hides its pull-out stand in the zinc alloy camera guard. It supports 15-85° viewing angles in both portrait and landscape orientations. With its 2mm camera edge it’s more protective than the basic model.

Unlike Apple’s ugly Pro and Pro Max clear cases, ESR’s design ensures that the Apple logo remains fully visible without obstruction, while still providing strong magnetic performance. That means you can see Apple’s original iPhone color through the clear case, and the bottom section has cutouts where necessary compared to the fully open section on the Apple Clear Case.

Made of polypropylene, a hard yet flexible plastic, the Totallee Scarf is the slimmest (0.5mm) iPhone 17 case available and—by a long way—the lightest. Even at this weight, there are button covers, and a cutout for the Camera Control. The lip around the camera and at the front are smaller than on other cases but the emphasis is on thinness rather than chunky protection. It offers protection from bumps, scratches, dirt, and minor drops (3 feet).

There is a clear version and a similar Frosted Clear model, plus a bunch of other frosted colors to choose from, but only Clear, Frosted and Black options for the MagSafe-compatible versions. Note that you have to pay a little more ($4) for the MagSafe-compatible versions, which we think is worth it but for a pure clear look the non-MagSafe version is the way to go.

The Totallee Spy case isn’t as thin but is still pretty marginal at 1mm thick, and has been tested with a 6-foot drop so you may thank yourself next time your new phone slips from your grasp. It is available only in only a Clear version for iPhone 17, iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro.

As with the ESR clear case reviewed above the Totallee clear cases don’t obstruct the phone’s true color like the ugly Apple case. This is achieved in the same way by having a small break in the magnet ring—without loss of functionality—so that Apple’s lower logo on the Pro models isn’t obscured.

Offering a selection of protection levels, Casetify’s Impact and Bounce cases are available for all models of the iPhone 17 family. It is solidly built and feels robust, offering a minimum of 6.6ft (2m) drop protection up to 32.8ft (10m) if you choose the Ultra Bounce Case with its standout corner bumpers.

The case edges aren’t clear because they feature extra-protective EcoShock or TesseLock designs. On one side there are sockets to easily attach phone charms. The more protection, sadly the less of the original phone can be seen even in a clear case, but most of the shock absorption on the Bounce case family protrudes from the corners.

Rokform is one of the most trusted market leaders in iPhone protection.

For those who want to see and show off at least some of their iPhone’s original coloring, but still gain maximum protection, Rokform offers its Crystal Case for the iPhone 17 family. This is more solid looking than even the Casetify Ultra Bounce reviewed above.

As you’d expect, that protection comes at the price of some bulk and heft. The case is not fully clear because its dual-construction black sides, textured-grip edges and corners are made from a military-grade polycarbonate and TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) combination to absorb shocks from drops and falls of up to 6 feet.

Magnetic itself you can securely clamp it onto any magnetic surface.

At present, the Rokform cases are too thick to work with all MagSafe chargers—it didn’t work with all the chargers we tested it with—so you will likely need to remove your phone from the case to charge it wirelessly.

The case also features the Rokform’s famous twist-lock and magnetic mounting system for bike, motorcycle and car mounts. If you’re going biking with iPhone on your handlebars, a super-protective case is a must.

The smooth Apple Silicone case is a classic, popular protective iPhone covering—available in the widest range of colors with eight to choose from depending on which model you are buying for. There’s enough choice here to satisfy most people, but if you prefer to see the color of the iPhone itself, look to a clear case; see above.

Nomad has a range of cooly colored cases for the iPhone 17, although none for the plain 17 model. The slim, minimalist Modern Case features a satin-smooth matte backplate, grippy bumpers and metal buttons. It claims 8ft drop protection with a shock-absorbing TPU bumper.

As you’d expect from its name, the equally matte Rugged Case is more robust with 15ft drop protection, as its polycarbonate frame boasts fortified corner bumpers. We love the 2mm-thin dbrand Grip Case for several reasons. First, as the name suggests, it is supremely grippy but still slides from a pocket with ease. The sides feature gripped stripes on a textured frame and further ridged, easy-to-locate buttons. This should mean you are less likely to drop your iPhone unless you or someone else is really trying to make it happen.

Second, the screen has a tapered edge, allowing for easy edge-swipes along the center of the display with just a 0.4mm raised lip but a much more protective 1.5mm lip on the top and bottom. The camera lenses are protected with a 0.5mm lip but also features a “hooded” design around the entire camera housing, tapering both the rubberized rim and the rigid frame of the case to protect the cameras. This symmetrical design ensures that the camera protrusions don’t rock back-and-forth while sitting flat on a table surface.

The Limitless is a range of iPhone 17 cases that excellently mimics various materials, such as wood, pearl and leather on to its polycarbonate and TPE shell plus TPU sides and shock-absorbing bumpers. If you’re into your phone case looking a little different, we think this adds a certain gravity to the iPhone’s looks.

Protection level is high without making the case too bulky and the reinforced AiroShock impact-absorbing corner bumps are reasonably subtle. It has rippled grip ribs and side eyelets for wrist straps and phone slings.

Much nicer than the rather lame Beats case line-up for the previous iPhone 16 family, there’s some real imagination pout into the Beats iPhone 17 range of polycarbonate cases. One model boasts a removable lanyard loop that doubles up as a stand for hands-free viewing in landscape mode. Just open the adapter at the end of the lanyard loop and attach it to a magnetic point on the edge of the case.

For $14 less you can get the same case but without the multi-purpose lanyard. This is the only version of the Beats case made for the iPhone Air.

This is not a case in the normal definition but the stylish metal shells offer protection where it matters most, leaving the rest of your iPhone as naked as Apple intended. They look like futuristic Gaudi-esque jewelry made from molten metal.

The Arc Pulse is a two-part design, with a top section protecting the corners, camera lens and screen, and a bottom section covering the corners. Both are made from aluminum with an anti-scratch coating—or aerospace-grade 5 titanium coated with our Onyx Black Tungsten Carbide if you have deep pockets. The uncovered phone parts are protected from falls by the shells stopping the phone itself from touching the surface it is dropped on. Arc describes it as like a bikini for your phone.

They fit, adhesive-free, by simply—although firmly—sliding on. You need to apply some force at this stage but it feels robust and won’t slip off, even when repeatedly dragged from your pocket. Arc says it will protect from drops of up to 10 feet. As an iPhone case nerd it did feel strange leaving so much of the phone exposed but I still felt secure that a drop would be covered by the chunky metal shells.

One drawback is that you will most likely have to remove the lower part to clamp on a magnetic power bank, leaving the bottom the phone exposed while charging.

OtterBox is a well-known accessory maker, particularly in its protective phone cases. It has a wide ranges of iPhone 17 case models, and has introduced a new one for the iPhone 17 family.

The Sole Case is about the grip, with a high-ridge tread around the case edge that should mean fewer drops. The removable lanyard loop is another reason the Sole means the new iPhone should stay with you. Even if the iPhone does slip from your grasp OtterBox claims its 5x military-grade protection should come into play. The color choices might not be to your preference but that grip should make up for it.

The Symmetry Cactus Leather Case is made from an ethical leather substitute by Desserto, crafted from organic nopal cactus that are sustainably grown and harvested sustainably without the need for irrigation. Inside the case there’s a soft felt backing. There are plain color cases and also more fancy versions with stitched thread embroidery.

With the Wave range of biodegradable iPhone cases, you can protect your phone and the planet, reducing your plastic consumption. The plant-based phone cases are made from two commonly used biodegradable polymers. Known for its rigid and transparent properties PLA (Polylactic Acid) is derived from renewable resources such as wheat straw. PBAT (Polybutylene Adipate Terephthalate) is a biodegradable copolyester that offers flexibility and durability. Together they make an eco-friendly material that works well for phone protection.

Despite being plastic-free the smooth but grippy Wave cases have “been “military grade” (MIL-STD 810) drop protection, shock-absorbing corners and feature a generous protective 2mm lip around the screen and camera—one of the tallest we have seen.

Tech21 has a range of Evo cases for the iPhone 17 family, including the iPhone Air.

Most protective is the EvoPro that offers 32.8ft (10m) impact protection and a textured grip. The EvoCheck has 16ft (4.9m) drop protection and interchangeable buttons so you can mod the look at the sides. EvoCrystal is even more fun with the same level of protection but a glow-in-the-dark MagSafe ring in green, gold, silver and iridescent. If you want to stick with what Apple gave you, there’s the EvoClear with 12ft (3.6m) impact protection. None offera cover for Apple’s Camera Control if that matters to you.

UAG cases look formidable, like military vehicles lined up to cross deserts and battlefields without getting a single dent when the artillary starts raining down. There’s huge range to choose from: we counted 15 different types but here are our favorites.

The Monarch Pro ($84.95) and Monarch Pro Kevlar ($99.95) are UAG’s flagship and most popular protective cases with the Kevlar model. They boast sculpted corners for reinforced drop protection (25 feet) and textured edges for enhanced grip. This is the phone case that Judge Dredd might carry in his holster. The 2-piece PC/TPU co-mold Trooper ($64.95) is the most durable case in the USG lineup—an Ultra protective case with a covered charging port providing a protective defense against the elements plus 30-foot drop protection.

The thinner-profile Civilian ($64.95) has a special-edition orange version for 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max owners. A HyperCush impact protection system offers 20-foot drop protection, and there’s an anti-slip traction grip to stop you dropping it in the first place. UAG’s Pathfinder cases ($59.95) has the widest choice of colours and an ultra-light PC impact frame that still offers 18-foot drop defence. If you want to show some pride in the flag there are some patriotic Stars and Stripes versions to chhose.

The lighter weight Plasma XTE ($74.95) with integrated ring kickstand has a wide range of colour choices, and still distresses with 20-foot drop protection. The solid Metropolis ($69.95) is a crowd pleaser with Kevlar and color options, plus 18-foot drop defensive features.

There’s also a clear case, the $54.95 Pylo, that has a decent grip plus air-soft cushioned corners that give it 16-foot drop protection that still beats most other cases. Named after an active volcano near Seattle and boasting a claimed 22-foot (6.7m) drop protection (the highest we’ve seen), the dual-material Zagg Rainier Snap is an ultra-protective iPhone 17 case that, surprisingly, is not as bulky as a boulder.

This is down to its Graphene-infused back plate and shock-absorbing corner bumpers. Graphene is the strongest material known to man—supposedly up to 200x stronger than steel, which might be useful if you do drop this phone case into a volcano. The case’s border features TPU.

Its rugged, textured finish adds a good grip, and when it’s not in your hand there’s an integrated metal kickstand that works in both landscape and portrait modes. The Rainier is constructed with up to 80% post-consumer recycled materials.

There’s nothing colorful about this super-shielding iPhone case. If you want your iPhone case to shout “Protection!”, market leader Rokform’s aptly named Rugged Case looks the business and is built like a tank but still looks sleek.

Rokform claims the case can withstand drops of up to 6 feet (1.8m) due to its construction from a combination of high-impact polycarbonate and rugged TPU for impact resistance and cushioning.

Like its clear-ish Crystal Case reviewed in our clear case section higher up, the Rugged Case features MAGMAX magnets that mean you can very securely clamp your encased iPhone onto any metal surface, plus Rokform’s RokLock twist-lock mounting system for twist-lock bike mounts, motorcycle mounts and car and golf-cart mounts.

The impact-resistant polycarbonate protective shell features reinforced corners and extra camera protection that makes it a little chunkier than standard cases but reassuringly so, and not ridiculous. It is more rigid than the Zagg Ranier Snap case, reviewed above, which also features a slightly more raised lip around the camera.

In its current form it is sadly not 100% compatible with MagSafe wireless charging, with the exception of Rokform’s own power banks and accessories.

The Rugged Case comes in black only, while the Crystal Case will show off the iPhone’s true body color.

The Benks ArmorPro offers great protection via its “3X military standard aerospace-grade 600D DuPont Kevlar fiber”—the same material that’s used in body armor and bulletproof vests, so it should be up to the job of protecting your phone when you drop it onto the pavement. It’s a woven fiber, giving it a slightly textured grippy feel, to keep the iPhone from falling out of your hand in the first place. With some cases that sometimes leads to a struggle to pull it quickly from a pocket but we didn’t find this to be a problem with the Benks Kevlar cases.

The metal frame on the back gives raised protection around the camera lenses—one of the best we’ve seen. The buttons on the sides are nicely solid in the TPU frame that offers superior shock resistance.

Benks also sells a lighter ArmorAir model that has exposed buttons and no TPU frame. The ArmorPro can withstand a 6-foot drop; the ArmorAir just 4ft. It is one of the lightest iPhone 17 cases we have tested, at just 20g. Even the ArmorPro weighs just 32g.

Add a touch of personality with the Aurora version that features stripes of color meant to resemble the etherial northern lights. An all-new AmorGrid version is based on the Chinese traditional Jiaoluo weaving technique.

All are MagSafe compatible, and priced around the same—although there are slight price differences with the back pattern options.

It looks the part, quite solid and slab-like but more flexible on the sides than the Rokform Rugged Case, see below. The integrated metal kickstand pulls out from the camera ring.

It is constructed with a three-layer design (TPU soft shell, TPE hard shell, and shock-absorbing Poron lining) that ESR claims can withstand drops from as high as 23 feet. The 2.4mm raised edge is one of the highest we’ve tested.

Unlike most macho protective cases, it’s available in a range of colors depending on the model of iPhone 17, including one in a fetching pink.

iPhone Air users in particular won’t want to add a big bulky case to their ultra-thin phone. Otherwise they’d just buy sone of the other iPhone 17 models. Thinborne makes cases so thin that even Air owners will think again and consider protecting their slim phone.

At only 0.04 inches thin and weighing under 18g, the 600D Aramid Fiber iPhone Air minimalist case offers scratch protection without spoiling the Air experience.

Fully MagSafe compatible, the case features a textured finish for an enhanced grip, which adds anti-slip protection. To maintain the case-less feel, there are button cutouts rather than protective covers and there’s no lip on the front to protect the screen—instead there’s a screen protector included with each case, although there’s no easy-application tray as you’d get with a separate premium screen protector. Oxidized black aluminum is used for the raised lip around the camera lenses.

iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max owners can also enjoy the benefits of a super-thin 0.04-inch case. Thinborne’s cases for these phones weigh a little more at 22g but are otherwise very similar.

The sleek and good-looking A17 Slim Shockproof Case (from $59.98) is available for the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, featuring what Aulumu calls “CoolHyper Superconductive Cooling Technology” that integrates a silicone cooling pad and aluminum plate to reduce device temperature “by up to 46%”.

Unique among the iPhone cases reviewed here is a color-changing smart sensor that monitors the iPhone’s CPU temperature and in real-time visually alerts users as the heat increases: red for 25° and yellow for 45°. Heat can be the enemy of the phone’s battery so this could prove to be a secondary level of iPhone protection. Around the flash and Lidar Scanner the rear camera section is part covered for further defense.

There are also Vegan Leather CoolHyper cases for iPhone 17 Pro and Max with the same cooling tech and temperature sensor as the Shockproof Case. Also available on Amazon.

Aulumu also sells the A17 Frosted Case (available in translucent gray or white from $39.98), which is constructed from 100% TPU with a dual-sided IMD process that includes patterns that remain intact without fading. Beats has come up trumps with its cases for the iPhone 17, 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, although it’s less bothered by the Air.

This extra-durable case guards against drops and scratches with a rugged polymer backing boosted by impact-absorbing sidewalls and corners and an enclosed bottom. There’s extra grip via its textured matte exterior that Beats claims reduces signs of scratches, smudges and fingerprints.

But what we really like about the Beats Rugged Case is that it gives you the opportunity to spurn Apple’s limited color choices. If you love the iPhone 17 Pro’s Cosmic Orange but can afford only the plain iPhone 17, then the Sierra Orange Beats Rugged Case transforms the cheaper iPhone into something resembling the pricey Pro. Want a black 17 Pro Max, just slip on the Everest Black Beats Rugged Case. Even the insides are rather dashing.

That said, Beats being from the Apple stable means you pay a premium for its wares, too.

While most cases protect from drops and falls, none is as grippy as the Smartish Gripzilla iPhone case that features special finger grooves along the textured sides that make it less likely for you to drop the phone from your hand in the first place. If you drop it, Smartish claims its air-pocket corners can withstand a drop from 6 feet, which should account for most non-giant-related accidents.

Slightly less grippy but still grippier than most cases, the Smartish Gripmunk case has the same textured sides for a firmer hold than you’ll get with a glossy case. It also has more color and pattern options.

This OtterBox Defender Pro cases for the whole iPhone 17 family is constructed (by you) from either two or three protective pieces. OtterBox claims it has been tested to 7x military-grade protection levels. The slimmer two-part Defender Pro XT case remains reasonably thin but lacks the grippier sides of the three-part non-XT model. Its back is clear, although some versions have a pattern on top.

Both feature shock-absorbing corners that don’t stick out too much like on some ultra-protective cases. The final third layer provides grippy sides and back to help prevent phone drops in the first place.

One feature lacking from most cases is a protective port cover to stop fluff and other debris entering the USB-C opening. I’ve had to make a couple of trips to the Apple Store to remove dust and dirt that I couldn’t find myself, so appreciate this feature.

Both models can be bought with a free holster that clips to belts or bags and can double as a kickstand.

Slimmer still and still a two-part build with grippy sides, the OtterBox Commuter boasts 3x military-grade protection, and is an easier slide in and out of your pocket.

Pitaka has a range of cases for the iPhone 17 family, but in terms of protection we prefer the 2mm-thick ProGuard and UltraGuard Cases (from $59.99) that meet military-grade drop test standards. Unlike many of the cases reviewed here it boasts metal side buttons.

As with the other Pitaka cases, it is constructed from robust aerospace-grade aramid fiber (aromatic polyamide) blended with shockproof TPU sides. This tough material resists scratches, abrasions and exposure to chemicals. An added benefit is that this weave gives the case textured patterns that stand out from the crowd. Inside it is lined with soft Nappa leather to provide cushioning for the back of the phone.

The UltraGuard case also boasts an extra Orca Resin layer.

It is also slim and lightweight unlike chunkier protective cases and slides in and out of a pocket with ease. At present, the ProGuard and UltraGuard cases are available for the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max only. Owners of the iPhone 17 and iPhone Air can buy the 1.2mm-thin Ultra-Slim Case that is also made from Aramid fiber.

There are various options, with and without grippy sides or a special ClickLock system that promises enhanced MagSafe locking.

Drop protection is up to 13 feet (4m) with shock-absorbing corner cushions. The iPhone’s Camera Control is a cutout rather than a capacitive cover as found on most cases reviewed here.

Most wallet iPhone cases place the card slots at the back, which can hamper wireless MagSafe charging. What are the specifications? The specs for the M4 MacBook Air offer an improvement on the previous generation. The MacBook Air now ships with at least 16GB RAM and we recommend avoiding older stock with just 8GB RAM.

The MacBook Air has Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) for connecting to a network. It provides built-in Bluetooth (5.3) for wirelessly connecting a mouse or other peripherals. If you want to connect to an ethernet network, you need an adapter.

How fast is it? When we tested the M4 MacBook Air we were impressed by the Geekbench 6.4 results. It was much faster than the M3 MacBook Air and the M4 chip even beats the M3 Pro in some tests as you can see in our Mac processor benchmarks. If you are upgrading from an old Mac – especially if it is one with an Intel chip – you will see a big difference.

Any other considerations? The MacBook Air should be more than fast enough for general-purpose use. The only issue is that, because it doesn’t have a fan, it may slow down during long processing sessions to keep cool. So if you are likely to be video editing or compiling code the MacBook Pro with its fan is a better choice. Also note that (as with almost all Macs) it’s impossible to upgrade the storage or memory after purchase, so you should buy the model with the largest amount of storage and memory you can afford.

Why we recommend the 13-inch MacBook Air: The MacBook Air is a great choice for someone who does general-purpose work and moves around a lot, such as a student or a self-employed person.

What is it? There are three distinct types of MacBook Pro, the M5 model discussed here, and the M4 Pro and M4 Max models we look at separately. Like it’s more powerful siblings, the M5 MacBook Pro has an HDR ProMotion display, which the MacBook Air lacks. The MacBook Pro offers more ports than the MacBook Air: HDMI and SDXC slots. The 14-inch MacBook Pro offers 24 hour battery life – which, along with the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M4 Pro chip, is the best battery life ever on a MacBook.

What’s new? In October 2025 Apple updated the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 chip . There are no other major changes, aside from the new option to add 4TB storage at point of sale (for $1,000). Bigger changes came with the launch of the M4 MacBook Pro in October 2024, back then we saw RAM increase from 8GB to 16GB as standard, camera improvements, and Thunderbolt 4 support.

Who’s it for? The 14-inch MacBook Pro is for a more demanding user than the MacBook Air. Its main benefit is the design allows for better cooling, which means that if you push the machine it won’t slow down to avoid overheating. However, there are other MacBook Pros available from Apple (including a 16-inch model) that offer faster processors, so if you really need a powerful machine one of those might be more suitable–we discuss the M4 Pro and M4 Max models below. (Note: Apple didn’t update the MacBook Pro with M5 Pro or M5 Max chips when it introduced the M5 MacBook Pro, we expect to see those models launch in the spring of 2026).

The 14-inch MacBook Pro also comes with an HDMI port for connecting an external display or projector, and an SDXC Card slot for plugging in memory cards from cameras, audio recorders, and other devices. The HDMI port also supports multichannel audio output. The 14-inch MacBook Pro also has Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) and Bluetooth 5.3 for wireless connectivity.

How fast is it? Apple described the M5 chip in the MacBook Pro as offering a “big leap” in AI performance thanks to a Neural Accelerator in each core. It also offers 4x better graphics performance compared to the M4, according to Apple. We’ll be verifying this once we have a unit for review. Eventually the MacBook Air will gain the M5 chip, though probably not until spring 2025. When it does, we expect that the Air will match the specs of the M5 MacBook Pro, but the Pro will still outperform the Air due to the inclusion of a fan for cooling (the MacBook Air doesn’t have the space for this). The M5 will no doubt see some impressive benchmarks, outperforming some older Pro chip, however, it is unlikely it will match the power of the M4 Pro or even the M4 Max, so if you need a really powerful Mac you should look to the MacBook Pro with M4 Pro or Max, or await the M5 editions of those chips.

Any other considerations? As usual our advice is to max out the RAM (aka Unified Memory) and storage when you buy a Mac because you can’t update it later on. At least Apple no longer sells an 8GB version.

Why we recommend the 14-inch MacBook Pro (M5): The 14-inch MacBook Pro costs $1,599/£1,599, which is much more than the 13-inch MacBook Air at $1,099/£1,099. However the $500/£500 difference is misleading: when comparing like for like, the 15-inch MacBook Air with 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD costs $200/£200 less than the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the same 16GB memory and 512GB SSD. For that extra $200 you get a machine that is better suited to processor intensive work – and while we await the M5 MacBook Air, you are also getting a better processor.

What is it? The 14-inch MacBook Pro can also be configured with an M4 Pro or M4 Max chip, which are much more powerful than the standard chip in the M4 MacBook Pro. The Pro and Max MacBook Pro can support up to 16-core CPU, 40-core GPU, 128GB memory and 8TB storage, for a seriously fast Mac laptop. There’s a larger 16-inch MacBook Pro with similar specs that we discuss below. Note: Apple updated the entry-level MacBook Pro to an M5 in October 2025, but the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips are yet to launch.

What’s new? The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M4 Pro or M4 Max was introduced in October 2024. As well as more powerful chips, it brought better battery life, 24GB RAM as standard (up from 18GB), improved camera, and Thunderbolt 5. Battery is up from 18 hours to 22 hours for the M4 Pro (still 18 hours on the M4 Max). A fast charging feature allows the laptop to charge to 50 percent in 30 minutes, but you need to have the proper power adapter to do this.

Who’s it for? When Apple called these “Pro” laptops, they weren’t kidding. If your work is very demanding processing power, these laptops are happy to handle it. Work in pro-level software all the time? Get a 14- or 16-inch MacBook Pro. With either the M4 Pro or M4 Max processor, they’re the fastest laptops Apple has ever created. The 14-inch MacBook Pro is cheaper than the 16-inch model, so it’s a more budget-friendly choice, and if you pair it with an exteernal monitor the screen size isn’t important.

How much does the 14-inch MacBook Pro cost? There are three configurations starting at $1,999/£1,999. The ultimate option is the M4 Max version with a 14-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 36GB memory, and 1TB SSD, which costs $3,199/£3,199.

How fast is it? Apple built the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models with pro users in mind and it shows in the performance. Now that Apple has introduced the M4 Pro and M4 Max you can enjoy the fastest Mac laptops Apple has ever made, although when it comes to graphics prowess the Max will always beat the Pro. So if you need the fastest then you’ll want to upgrade to the M4 Max which beats the M2 Ultra, only the M3 Ultra is faster than the M4 Max.

Any other considerations? Our advice would be that if you are considering the 14-inch MacBook Pro because you need a powerful Mac then, ignore the $1,999/£1,999 model in favor of the $2,399/£2,399 model that has more CPU and GPU cores. If you don’t need 1TB storage, save money by adding the M4 Pro with 14-core CPU, and 20-core GPU as a build-to-order option to the $1,999/£1,999 model for an additional $200/£200, bringing the price to $2,199/£2,199. Also note that for fast charging you need a 96W adapter. We expect that Apple will introduce the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips in spring 2026, so only buy now if you can’t wait until then.

Why we recommend the 14-inch MacBook Pro (M4 Pro or M4 Max): If you want a laptop that can handle any task you throw at it—and you don’t have a constraining budget—you want a MacBook Pro. The only reason not to buy the 14-inch M4 Pro or M4 Max MacBook Pro would be if you saw a good deal on the M3 Pro/M3 Max version–we’ve been seeing some excellent deals and price cuts on the older models, just remember that there was less RAM in those model (18GB rather than 24GB at the entry-level).

What is it? The 16-inch MacBook Pro offers a similar set of specs and configuration options as the 14-inch MacBook Pro (above), but it has a higher price, a bigger screen, and better battery life (24 hours, up from 22 hours on the predecessor).

What’s new? The 16-inch MacBook Pro with M4 Pro or M4 Max was introduced in October 2024. Along with more powerful chips, it offers better battery life (up to 24 hours), minimum 24GB RAM (up from 18GB), improved camera, and Thunderbolt 5. The M5 Pro and M5 Max models are expected to launch in spring 2026.

Who’s it for? This is Apple’s largest ‘pro’ laptop and it’s designed for people who need a portable Mac to do work that demands extreme processing power. You could save some money with the 14-inch MacBook Pro, but if you need a big screen on your laptop this is the Mac for you. You’ll also benefit from longer battery life. Configured with the M4 Max this is the fastest and most powerful laptop Apple has ever created.

How fast is it? The 16-inch MacBook Pro models were built with pro users in mind so you can expect excellent performance. Your software will be able to take full advantage of the CPU’s multiple cores. If you are a professional, you’ll benefit from the M4 Pro. If you want the ultimate Mac, the M4 Max beats the M2 Ultra, only the M3 Ultra in the Mac Studio is faster than the M4 Max.

Any other considerations? Look out for deals and price cuts on the M3 Pro and M3 Max models, but note that there is more RAM in the newer models (24GB up from 18GB for the entry-level M4 Pro).

Why we recommend the 16-inch MacBook Pro (M4 Pro or M4 Max): The 16-inch MacBook Pro is a powerful workstation that will meet the needs of the most demanding user.

What is it? The Mac mini was already Apple’s smallest desktop Mac, but 2024’s M4 and M4 Pro models are even smaller following a redesign that means it now measures 5 inches by 5 inches, down from 7.75 inches by 7.75 inches. It offers a nice combination of speed and, at just $599/£599, affordability. It’s more than fast enough for general-purpose use, in fact, its multi-core speed is so good that if you use a professional app like a video editor, 3D software, or developer tools, the Mac mini can handle it, no problem.

What’s new? The Mac mini with M4 and a Mac mini with M4 Pro were introduced in October 2024. Along with the faster processors Apple redesigned the Mac mini, so it’s now even smaller.

Who’s it for? Because of its price and performance, the Mac mini is a great Mac for just about anybody. It makes for an ideal primary Mac for a home or small office. Professionals on a budget will be satisfied with the Mac mini. If you’re switching from a PC, you can use your PC’s keyboard and mouse with the Mac mini. The Mac mini is also ideal as a secondary Mac in your home, and it can integrate into your home entertainment center.

How much does the Mac mini cost? There are three standard configurations starting at $599/£599 for the Mac mini M4. At the top of the range is an M4 Pro Mac mini with a 12-core CPU, 16-core GPU, 24GB unified memory, and 512GB SSD which costs $1,399/£1,399. The price is about $1,000/£1,000 less for a similarly specced MacBook Pro, although, in each case, the MacBook has a bigger SSD.

What are the specifications? Apple sells three Mac mini models.

The M4-based Mac minis have three Thunderbolt 4/USB 4 ports, while the M4 Pro-based Mac mini has three Thunderbolt 5 ports. All Mac minis also offer an additional two USB-C ports, an HDMI 2.0 port, a headphone jack, and a gigabit ethernet port. They no longer offer USB-A ports. To connect a display, you can use the HDMI port or a Thunderbolt port. You might have to buy an adapter if your display doesn’t have either HDMI or a port that can connect to Thunderbolt.

How fast is it?  The M4-based Mac minis are very fast, and offer the best performance-to-price ratio of any Mac that Apple offers. The Mac mini with M4 Pro offers the same 12-core CPU and 16-core GPU, 24GB memory, and 512GB storage that is found in the M4 Pro MacBook Pro for $1,399 rather than $1,999 which represented a huge saving and a great way to get a powerful Mac without spending a fortune.

Any other considerations? The Mac mini, since it doesn’t include a screen, also doesn’t feature a camera, so you will need a separate webcam for conference calls. There is also no microphone integrated.

Why we recommend the Mac mini (M4): The Mac mini is an excellent machine for most Mac users—new or experienced, professional or general consumer. Plus the price is excellent: if you’re on a budget, it’s a great choice, especially if you already have a spare keyboard, mouse, and display.

What is it? The Mac Studio is the perfect compromise, offering the ultimate in power for less money. It’s a desktop Mac that offers the workstation-quality chips of the MacBook Pro for a fraction of the price. All it lacks are the Mac Pro’s expansion options.

What’s new? In 2025 Mac Studio gained an M4 Max and M3 Ultra option. This was a leap from the M2 Max and M2 Ultra in the predecessor. There isn’t a M4 Ultra option (Apple may be reserving this for the Mac Pro).

Who’s it for? The Mac Studio with M4 Max is for the user who wants a lot of processing power in a desktop Mac for a bargain price. It is the cheapest way to get M4 Max chip – the equivalent MacBook Pro costs $3,199/£3,199, albeit with 1TB instead of 512GB storage, while the Mac Studio starts at $1,999/£1,999. That’s a huge $1,200 leap between machines, and even if you spent the extra $200 on storage you’d still have a lot of money left over.

How much does the Mac Studio cost? There are two standard configurations, an M4 Max and M3 Ultra (we’ll look at the Ultra below). Prices start at $1,999/£2,099 for the Mac Studio M4 Max with 32-core GPU and 512GB SSD. There are also build-to-order options for the M4 Max that include a 40-core GPU, up to 128GB Unified Memory, and 8TB SSD.

What are the specifications? The Mac Studio uses either the M4 Max or M3 Ultra processors. The standard configuration for the M4 Max is:

• Apple M4 Max SoC with a 14-core CPU, 32-core GPU, 36GB of memory, 16-core Neural Engine; 512GB SSD, $1,999/£2,099

To connect to a network, you can use the built-in ethernet port, or you can use Wi-Fi, which comes standard. To connect a display, you can use the HDMI 2.0 port or a Thunderbolt port. You might have to buy an adapter if your display doesn’t have either HDMI or a port that can connect to Thunderbolt. You can connect up to eight 4K displays, eight 6K displays or four 8K displays thanks to Thunderbolt 5 on the 2025 model.

How fast is it? The M4 Max is a fast chip and the Mac Studio with M4 Max is a powerful Mac at a very competitive price point. If you want something even faster you need to look to the Mac Studio with M3 Ultra (below).

Any other considerations? The main disadvantage is that the Mac Studio relies on external connections for expandability. If you want a pro-level Mac with the ability to swap expansion cards you should look at Apple silicon-based Mac Pro below.

What is it? The iMac is what Apple is famous for, although the current design is as far removed from the original as you. can get. It’s the Mac to have in a living room or an office reception – somewhere you can show it off.

What’s new? In October 2024 Apple introduced the M4 version of the 24-inch iMac. Little has changed since the redesign of 2021, which represented the first major update in more than a decade, with a cleaner design and a choice of seven bright colors (slightly lighter shades for 2024).

Who’s it for? The iMac is great for both novices and demanding users. It can handle general-purpose and heavy-duty tasks equally well, although those after a replacement for a 27-inch IMac or iMac Pro might want to wait to see if the rumored iMac Pro ever materializes, or settle for a Mac mini Pro (above) or Mac Studio (below). It’s ideal for someone who needs to buy a complete computer setup (keyboard, mouse or trackpad, and display) and wants to maximize workspace efficiency. The 24-inch iMac is a design icon that will look great in any office.

How much does the iMac cost? When the M4 iMac Apple dropped prices outside the U.S. The three standard configurations start at $1,299/£1,299 for the entry-level model, $1,499/£1,499 for the mid-range, and $1,699/£1,699 for the top of the range.

What are the specifications? The 24-inch iMac uses Apple’s M4 chip, the same M4 that features in the 14-inch MacBook Pro, but in each case, there is half the storage and the price is $100 less. There are several configurations available as well as build-to-order options:

• Apple M4, 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU, 16GB memory, 256GB SSD, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, $1,299/£1,299.

What are the display specifications? The 24-inch 4.5K Retina display has 11.3 million pixels and supports the P3 wide color gamut, over a billion colors, 500 nits of brightness, and True Tone. Apple treats the display with an anti-reflective coating to help with readability. The display hasn’t changed since the M1 model launched.

How do I connect stuff? The $1,299 24-inch iMac 24 has two Thunderbolt 4 ports that also work with USB-C devices. The $1,499 and $1,699 iMacs have four Thunderbolt 4 ports (the previous generation had two Thunderbolt/USB 4 and two USB 3 ports). If you have a USB-A device, you need to buy an adapter, such as Apple’s ($19 / £19). If you have multiple USB-A devices and other items, consider a Thunderbolt hub. The 24-inch iMac also has a headphone jack on the side.

Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3 are built-in. Apple doesn’t put a gigabit ethernet port on the 24-inch iMac—instead, it’s on the power adapter. But that ethernet-equipped power adapter comes standard with the $1,499 and $1,699 models. It’s not included with the $1,299 model, but you can select it as an option at the point of purchase—and yes, that means you’ll have to pay extra for it.

How fast is it?: Since the 24-inch iMac has the same M4 as the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro, its speed is very similar. That means it’s fast. It’s got all the speed general consumers need, and it can handle pro applications with no problem. However, the $1,299 model has only one fan inside its body, while the $1,499 and $1,699 models have two fans. That means the high-priced models do a better job of keeping the internals cool. The $1,299 model may need to slow down its performance on heavy-duty tasks in order to maintain a proper temperature.

Any other considerations? We feel that the iMac price is high compared to the specs on offer, but we do admire the design. We are holding out for a bigger screen.

Why we recommend the iMac (M4): The iMac was greatly improved when Apple introduced the 24-inch model back in 2021, from the design to the display to its performance. But, we hope rumors that Apple may launch an iMac Pro model are true. If you are buying one the sweet spot is the $1,499/£1,499 model, which gets you more ports, Touch ID, and ethernet.

What is it? There is a configuration of Mac Studio that, like the Mac Pro, runs on Apple’s Ultra chips. The Ultra chip combines four of the standard M-series chips on one die for a super fast and ultra powerful system. Note that the Mac Studio features an M3 Ultra, not an M4 Ultra, and the M3 Ultra is faster and more powerful than the M4 Max.

What’s new? In March 2025 Apple updated the Mac Studio to run on an M3 Ultra chip. The surprising thing about this is that Apple didn’t jump straight to the M4 Ultra. No doubt Apple has a reason to choose to sell an M3 Ultra Mac Studio rather than an M4 Ultra Mac Studio (probably it doesn’t want it to overshadow the Mac Pro when that model gets the M4 Ultra). The M3 Ultra is the fastest Mac processor Apple makes (until the M4 Ultra arrives at least).

Who’s it for? The Mac Studio with M3 Ultra is for the user who wants the maximum processing power. It lacks the expansion options of the Mac Pro, but it brings all the power usually reserved for the ultimate Mac in a smaller and cheaper package.

How much does the Mac Studio cost? The Mac Studio M3 Ultra with 28-core CPU, 60-core GPU, 32-Core Neural Engine and 1TB SSD costs $3,999/£4,199. There are also build-to-order options that include a 32-core CPU, 80-core GPU, up to 512GB Unified Memory, and 16TB SSD. Fully maxed out a Mac Studio would cost $14,099/£14,299.

How do I connect stuff? The Mac Studio has the following ports:

To connect to a network, you can use the built-in ethernet port, or you can use Wi-Fi, which comes standard.

To connect a display, you can use the HDMI 2.0 port or a Thunderbolt port. You might have to buy an adapter if your display doesn’t have either HDMI or a port that can connect to Thunderbolt. You can connect up to eight 4K displays, eight 6K displays, or four 8K displays to the M2 Ultra.

How fast is it? The M3 Ultra Mac Studio is the fastest Mac Apple sells as of March 2025 and it does so at a very competitive price point. However, when the M4 Ultra arrives in the Mac Pro that will take the lead. We’ll be testing the M3 Ultra as soon as we can get our hands on the new Mac Studio.

Any other considerations? Sharing the same chip as the Mac Pro made the Mac Studio the obvious choice for anyone who wanted a powerful Mac without having to remortgage their house. Now that the Mac Studio runs on an M3 Ultra while the Mac Pro still only offers the M2 Ultra (for now) the Mac Studio is the fastest ever Mac. Those who might have chosen the Mac Pro may opt instead for the Mac Studio, it’s one disadvantage being that it lacks the Mac Pro’s expansion options.

Why we recommend the Mac Studio M3 Ultra: The Mac Studio with M3 Ultra is ideal for users who use processor- and graphics-intensive apps, such as media production, software development, graphics software, and more. If you find yourself spending a lot of time watching progress bars while you work, you’ll benefit from the power of the Mac Studio.

The only reason not to buy is if you want to wait to see what the Mac Pro with M4 Ultra offers, when, if ever, Apple launches it.

What is it? The Mac Pro is Apple’s workstation. It’s designed for professionals who need a powerful and flexible machine. Apple took its time to update the Mac Pro with its own silicon, but in June 2023, three and a half years after the previous update, the company finally came up with the goods. We are now waiting for Apple up update it from the M2 Ultra to the M4 Ultra.

Who’s it for? The Mac Pro is designed for professionals who work with applications that use as many processing cores as possible—video-editing applications, image-editing software, 3D programs, audio editing, software developers, and the like.

How much does the Mac Pro cost? The Mac Pro starts at $6,999/£7,199 (which is up from the previous generation’s starting price of $5,999/£5,499). That’s for the Tower version, there is also a Rack mount version that starts at $7,499/£7,699. Those are the starting prices, you can choose various configuration options, such as the 76-core GPU and the 192GB unified memory and 8TB storage – just as with the Mac Studio. A fully specced out Mac Pro Tower costs $11,799/£11,999.

What are the specifications? The specifications on offer are identical to the Mac Studio with M2 Ultra:

• Apple M2 Ultra SoC with a 24-core CPU, 60-core GPU, 64GB of memory, and a 32-core Neural Engine; 1TB SSD
• Additional options: M2 Ultra SoC with a 76-core GPU, up to 192GB unified memory, and up to 8TB SSD.

How do I connect stuff? Mac Pro has the following ports:

To connect external devices, the Mac Pro has six Thunderbolt 4/USB-C ports, two USB-A ports, two HDMI ports, and dual 10Gb Ethernet. But the real draw for creative pros will be the seven full-length PCI Express gen 4 slots, one of which comes with an Apple I/O card installed.

How fast is it? When it announced the model, Apple said the 2023 Mac Pro was up to 3x faster than the previous-generation Intel-based model. It was impressive at the time, but the M2 Ultra has been superceeded by the M4 Max in our tests, and now that Apple has updated the Mac Studio with the M3 Ultra you can expect even better performance from that model, which has the benefit of costing much less.

Apple says the M2 Ultra Mac Pro can plan an “unprecedented 22 streams of 8K ProRes video.” Just imagine what the new Mac Pro M4 Ultra will be capable of.

Macworld’s buying advice: The Mac Pro provides the processing power that the most demanding users need. We’re talking about production environments, like TV and audio recording studios, animation houses, and software developers. If you feel like you can never have enough power, you’re probably the professional the Mac Pro is aimed at. But if you don’t need the expandability then the Mac Studio will probably be adequate.

If you’re more of a “prosumer” than a professional—someone who is an expert Mac user, but doesn’t use high-end apps—the Mac Pro is overkill. You’re probably not going to be able to take advantage of what the Mac Pro has to offer.

Our recommendation is to wait until June 2025 for the long overdue M4 Ultra.

Portable monitors are usually associated with travel but, in reality, most never leave the home or office they’re shipped to. Many purchase portable monitors not for their portability but instead their versatility and ease of use—so it can be moved across a home or corporate office. At home, it could let you have two home office setups without having to purchase two monitors, or simply store the monitor out of sight in a cupboard when not in use. In an office, it could be carried to meetings if you need to lead a presentation or study a large spreadsheet. I’ve been on many a call, trying to keep on track on my MacBook as the presenter talks through a complex Excel doc. As large a portable monitor as possible is what you need in those situations—or a wide TV screen.

The Asus ZenScreen MB249C pairs a sizable 24-inch screen with several stand options including a kickstand/handle that makes it easy to tote around a house or corporate office. It provides excellent image quality for its intended purpose. It’s bright enough and scores well in contrast, color gamut, and color accuracy, all while avoiding notable problems or pitfalls.

The MB249C is a great choice for a second decent-sized monitor, too, as it offers multiple ways to mount and orient it alongside your primary monitor.–Matthew S. Smith

The standard way of adding more than one external display is to have two external monitors side by side, creating a wide extended screen display. A vertically stacked monitor, such as two Delta models from UPerfect—the dual 23.8-inch Delta Mega and dual 18.5-inch Delta Max Touch—can be more ergonomic as the body doesn’t need to frequently turn left and right. The line of sight remains directly in front of the user, reducing frequent rotation of the neck.

Both Delta models with IPS screens look sleek in black aluminum, with a built-in stand folded flush to the outside of the lower screen. You can modify the angle of the stand to adjust the height and angle of the screens to suit your best working posture. The central hinge also allows for flexible adjustment of the two screens to a comfortable and ergonomic angle when used in either a stacked arrangement or folded back on itself to share meeting content with people facing you—say, so you looking at one screen and the clients on the other side of the meeting seeing the other.

These portable monitors are a great solution if you want a good-looking, well-built and super-adjustable portable extended dual screen that connects to your laptop for a more spacious screen experience. The flexibility to bend right back to offer front and back mirrored screens could be the solutions you are looking for in a adaptable dual-screen display.

Delta Max Touch

The screens of the Delta Max Touch, pictured above, are supposed to feature touch controls and while it’s definitely there the touch functionality is basic at best and awkward in use. For our home-working setup we prefer the larger Delta Mega that is a little less portable by size but certainly easily carried short distances. When in use it creates a lot of HD screen space and, like the Delta Max, can easily be folded and stored out of sight when working from home, or commuted to an office or farther afield in a car. If you don’t need all that extra space the regular Delta Max without the average touch controls is a cheaper alternative.–Simon Jary

Budget portable monitors are a dime a dozen, and to be frank, many are interchangeable. That’s because most use the same IPS-LCD display panel technology, offer the same or similar ports, and are similar in size. The MSI Pro MP165 E6 also follows these trends but stands out with kickstand, 1/4-inch tripod and 75x75mm VESA mount options.

The MSI Pro MP165 E6 is a versatile option for shoppers who need a budget portable monitor that can be used with a VESA wall mount, a conventional monitor arm, or even a tripod.

Color gamut is where the MSI Pro MP165 E6 falls towards the bottom of the budget competition. It has a very limited color gamut that covers just 63 percent of sRGB and 47 percent of both DCI-P3 and AdobeRGB—compare that with the UPerfect Delta Max’s 100% or Delta Mega’s 97%. This is not a monitor for professional photo or video editing but, rather, a budget portable monitor for office productivity, digital signage, collaboration, and other tasks where color performance is less of a concern.–Matthew S. If you need a bigger screen you can plug a display into your Mac laptop, but if you want multiple screens without the giant extra monitors, a better option is to buy a portable external display. These displays tend to not be much larger than the display on your laptop, but they don’t add a much more weight and can more than double your screen space.

The Limink LK14 portable Tri-screen Monitor is a screen extender that your MacBook fits into and adds a 14-inch screen either side of the laptop’s own. It is compatible with 13-16-inch MacBooks, and connects via either USB-C or HDMI cables (included).

Setup is easy and you can attach and detach this extender to your MacBook in about a minute.

It’s HD rather than 4K and so is not as sharp and clear as the MacBook’s own. But it’s fine for spreadsheets, browsers and other mainstream applications. It’s great for adding supplementary screen estate when you’re on a video call, or for presentations.

At $699, it is expensive, but you are paying for portability and two decent screens. The whole package, which comes with a leather protective cover, can be folded up and placed in a drawer when not in use, and is light enough (3.3lbs; 1.5kg) to take with you on your travels.–Simon Jary

This clever display is actually an LED Pico projector that can transform into a fold-out 24.5-inch monitor via a collapsible shroud that surrounds the projector as it projects the image from your computer via the HDMI connection. The price is high but this portable all-environment, 2-in-1 screen might solve your display needs away from a standard desk setup.

Setup is easy and there’s a useful video available for teaching you all its tricks. When collapsed the whole thing fits into a small box a bit larger than an iPad mini or over-ear headphones case (see our photo above), albeit quite a fat one, at 9.5 x 9.5 x 3.5 inches. It weighs 2.5lbs (1.1kg), so combined with the foldability it’s more portable than traditional fixed and firmer monitors.

The 24.5-inch screen displays a native 1920 x 1080 resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio, with a max brightness of 760 nits in display mode.

While the nanomaterial screen is flexible, it is taut and wrinkle-free. You adjust focus and brightness via controls on the top of the projector body. Comapred to a standard hard monitor it’s not as great for reading a lot of small text on the screen but its target function for viewing from distance.

The Splay is marketed at on-the-road presentations and trade shows, videos, but it would work as well for showing videos at home or on a camping trip when a laptop just isn’t large enough. The 44Wh battery should keep the screen bright for up to four hours and handily can triple-up as a power bank to top up your phone or laptop via USB-C. It has stereo speakers built-in, with volume controls on the projector.

A 35-inch version of the Splay is planned for launch in August.

This iPhone magnetic power bank is our overall winner as it is a champion in terms of both recharging capacity and speed at which it can be recharged itself. It has a large capacity, refilling a iPhone 16 Pro twice over in our tests—equalling the best we’d seen before. We run the iPhone’s battery down, recharge using the power bank, and keep doing this until the power bank is empty.

What makes this power bank special—although not unique—is its short built-in 65W USB-C cable that can be used for fast-charging an iPhone 15, 16 or 17 or refilling the power bank itself. The cable fits neatly away when not in use at the bottom of the power bank.

Wirelessly it will work with any MagSafe iPhone (12/13/14/15/16/17) at 15W. iPhone 15/16/17 users can connect via the integrated USB-C cable or a separate longer cable via the side USB-C port if required, for faster 30W charging. Owners of earlier iPhones can use a USB-C to Lightning cable instead for fast 20W wired charging from the power bank’s port. Note that the iPhone 16e does not work with magnetic wireless charging.

The Baseus Nomos power bank, reviewed below, matches it for wireless charging speed as both use 15W Qi2 technology. They also boast faster wired charging via their similar built-in USB-C cable. In our recharging tests it beat the Nomos by spreading its 10000mAh battery capacity for longer: 190% vs 166%. However, both are beaten on charging speed by the new generation of Qi2 25W power banks such as the Ugreen MagFlow 10K reviewed below. That said, the 25W power banks we have tested didn’t match the EcoFlow or Anker on battery capacity in our tests.

While the 10K Anker Zolo matched the 10K EcoFlow Rapid on recharging capacity in our tests, but has a slower 7.5W wireless charging speed.

No 10K magnetic wireless power bank can match the EcoFlow on input speed—that is the rate at which it is recharged itself. Its 65W input is much faster than the 30W boasted by the Baseus or the 20W of the Anker.

While winning on charging performance and capacity, the EcoFlow Rapid is reasonably chunky compared to the Anker Zolo and Baseus Nomos, and notably bulkier than smaller-capacity 5K power banks. It’s still pocketable but the slightly larger size is the compromise for the other benefits. If you want a slimmer battery pack, look for a smaller 5000mAh option—we’ve tested the best slim power banks further on. It has a handy pull-out kickstand at the back.

This power bank is clearly built for the iPhone 15/16/17 families—with its neat integrated USB-C cable—but it works as well as any other wireless power bank tested here with the other MagSafe iPhones, and that built-in cable can be used to charge the power bank itself.

We love this iPhone magnetic power bank for its large capacity, which was (albeit narrowly) the best in our recharging tests. It refilled a faded iPhone 15 Pro twice over in our tests—the best we’ve seen. The EcoFlow Rapid 10K power bank was very close in our tests, but is a little larger and heavier and with a less affordable price-tag.

The 10K Anker Zolo is rated at just 7.5W for wireless charging as it is only “MagSafe compatible” rather than using certified MagSafe or Qi2 magnetic wireless technologies. That said, if you need to recharge quickly you can use its built-in 5.5-inch USB-C cable that can be used for fast-charging an iPhone 15/16/17 at 30W or refilling the power bank itself at 20W. The cable can be neatly hooked into a loop for easy carrying. Owners of earlier iPhones should use the side USB-C port and a separate Lightning cable for 20W wired charging from the power bank.

Where the Anker Zolo triumphs is its value: it wins on capacity where it loses on charging speed, but it’s easily the best value if you don’t mind the charging speed compromise.

There are smaller-capacity 5K power banks, but the 10K Anker Zolo is still very pocketable for such a high-capacity battery pack. It’s around the same size as other 10000mAh MagSafe power banks we’ve tested—except for its sibling the Anker MagGo 10K Slim, reviewed below. Our overall best 10K magnetic power bank, the EcoFlow Rapid 10K, is noticeably bigger, although still portable.

This 25W wireless power bank lived up to its claims of wirelessly charging an iPhone 16 Pro from 0% to 50% in 32 minutes—12 to 15 minutes faster than a 15W power bank. That might not sound a lot but when you’re in a rush to charge your phone, every minute counts. 25W wireless charging is limited to the iPhone 16 and 17 families, running at least iOS 26; older iPhones will charge at 15W using this power bank.

The Baseus PicoGo Magnetic 10K Power Bank (AM61) is an output blazer is more ways than one. It is certified Qi 2.2 so charges wirelessly at 25W, as fast as the Ugreen MagFlow reviewed below, and like the MagFlow also boasts a built-in USB-C cable. While the Ugreen’s cable can wired-charge at 30W, the Baseus is rated at 45W, which is fast enough to keep a MacBook going. We will be running further tests to see how much recharge it could offer a MacBook; watch this space.

If you use the wireless charging pad, the handy integrated USB-C cable and the spare USB-C port to simultaneously charge three devices—say your iPhone, Apple Watch and AirPods—total output is restricted to 15W.

When recharging an iPhone, it refilled our test 16 Pro more than one and a half times, scoring 167% in the Macworldm Recharge Score—going that bit further than the Ugreen MagFlow that scored 144%. Other 10K power banks have performed better: we recorded scores of 190% with the 15W EcoFlow Rapid 10K and 7.5W Anker Zolo 10K, although both lag behind the Baseus in terms of charging speed.

One area where the Baseus is not the champ is input: the speed at which it is recharged itself. Input power is 30W, which is average but nowhere near the EcoFlow battery pack’s unmatched 65W.

The same company also sells the Baseus Nomos Magnetic 10K Power Bank that, like the PicoGo, has an integrated 45W USB-C cable, but slower 15W Qi2 wireless charging. Its recharge score of 166% is remarkably close to that of the 25W PicoGo. As it is priced similarly to the 25W PicoGo, the newer model makes more sense.

This was the first Qi2 25W wireless power bank that we tested, and it completed a 50% recharge in just over 30 minutes—so matching the 25W Baseus PicoGo reviewed above. It’s faster at being recharged itself, with a 30W input beating the PicoGo’s 20W input.

Total output when using all three charging points—magnetic wireless, USB-C cable and USB-C port—is limited to 12.5W.

While, with the Baseus PicoGo 25W, it’s the equal fastest power bank at charging the iPhone, it paled a little in actual recharge performance, refilling an iPhone 16 Pro’s battery once fully and then 44% on second recharge. That 144% recharge score is under the PicoGo’s 167% and not as great as the 190% seen with the 15W EcoFlow and 7.5W Anker Zolo wireless power banks also reviewed above. The power bank itself can be recharged at 30W, which is faster than the PicoGo and Zolo 10K power banks but at the 65W level of the EcoFlow Rapid.

These points aside, the Ugreen 25W MagFlow Power Bank is a super-speedy wireless charger for those in the biggest hurry for power.

At just 0.58 inches thick, this 10000mAh power bank rivals even some of the 5000mAh battery packs in terms of slimness. It’s also lighter than any other 10K magnetic wireless power bank that we have tested, and wins too on recharging power. It’s only the integrated USB-C cable that pushes us to recommend the Anker Zolo or Baseus power banks for owners of the iPhone 15/16/17. While I admire the built-in cables, I admit that the Anker Slim is the magnetic power bank in my backpack every day.

It uses fast Qi2 magnetic tech, so can wirelessly charge at an impressive 15W. If you have a spare cable with you, it can charge at twice that speed via its USB-C port. This makes it as fast a wireless charger as the Baseus Nomos reviewed above. The Baseus charger is more convenient with its built-in USB-C cable, but owners of iPhones 12/13/14 might appreciate the ability to add a Lightning cable to the USB-C port and charge that way. Wired charging via Lightning is limited to 20W—a limitation set by Apple to ensure device safety and performance, not by the cable or the power bank. The newer Ugreen MagFlow is the outstanding winner on wireless charging speed but is a lot wider than this slim machine.

In our tests it performed among the best of the 10K magnetic power banks we have put through their paces: recharging an iPhone 15 Pro to 188% (over the course of two iPhone charges from one power bank charge).

It’s available in up to four colors depending on your country and where you buy it—the pink and teal versions are available only direct from Anker.

There’s an even slimmer 5K Anker Nano model, reviewed below.

Around the same size as the Anker Zolo power bank, reviewed above, the Anker MagGo Power Bank (10K) didn’t quite match that battery pack in terms of recharging but was still impressive—around the same as the Baseus Nomos.

Where it beats the Zolo and matches the Nomos and EcoFlow Rapid is in wireless charging speed. The Anker MagGo is certified for the new Qi2 standard and so supports 15W wireless charging. This works with all MagSafe-supporting devices: from the iPhone 12 to 17. (Note that the iPhone 12 doesn’t officially support Qi2 but Macworld iPhone 12 Qi2 tests suggest that it does.)

The Zolo/Nomos/Rapid have a slightly more powerful cabled charging spec (30W vs Anker’s 27W) but the difference is negligible. We like the integrated USB-C cable included with those power banks, but any decent USB-C charging cable can be used with the MagGo to fast wire-charge an iPhone.

Aside from faster wireless charging, the Anker boasts a easy-to-read digital display that shows you exactly how much charge is left in the battery pack. Seeing the actual percentage is much more useful than the traditional four LED lights seen on most power banks. It also features a solid pull-out stand at the back.

This power bank stands out with its Aramid Fibre weave—a high strength material that is more resistant to heat, cuts and abrasion than other cases and is often used in protective clothing and aerospace parts.

The rose gold color also looks rather nice. Benks doesn’t call it that (or anything) but that’s how it looks with a pleasing weave pattern.

It’s Qi2 so capable of 15W charging—no longer the fastest but what was until recently the cutting edge of wireless power. It scored a decent 165% in the Macworld recharging tests so will give you over 1.5 charges before it, too, needs filling up—which, by the way, it takes its time doing as the 15W input power is less than on other power banks.

Benks also offers an equally tough and super-slim 5K Aramid Fiber model, although it is only MagSafe Compatible so a slower charging experience at 7.5W. The 10K model is Qi2 so faster 15W charging power.

Much bigger and meaner than the power banks reviewed above, the Statik 5-in-1 Travel Charger is a power bank that can charge five devices simultaneously: two through the USB-C and USB-A ports, one wirelessly through a magnetic charging pad, and two through the built-in cables (USB-C for iPhone 15/16/17 and Lightning for older iPhones).

In our tests, it was very close in battery charging power to the top scorers—charging an iPhone 16 Pro nearly twice over.

It claims to offer 15W of wireless power but isn’t officially certified by Apple, so we rate it at 7.5W for wireless. There are two integrated output cables: one USB-C for iPhone 15/16/17, and one Lightning for older iPhones and Apple devices. If you don’t have any Lightning-based devices this will be superfluous, although friends in need of power may thank you if their iPhones are older. Most people’s AirPods are still Lightning based, so you may well find a use for it.

It features built-in U.S. plug prongs so can be connected straight into a power socket rather than requiring a separate USB-C charger. This is fine for users based in the U.S. or Canada, but not for international users, although there are U.K., E.U, and AU/NZ plug adapters included making it work in those countries and as a travel companion. The power bank even features a handy pull-out phone clip that holds your phone upright, although the placement of the cables means the battery pack can’t charge your phone while it’s in the mini stand.

Unlike the more svelte power banks reviewed here, the Statik SmartCharge 5-in-1 Power Bank is too big and bulky to let you slip the iPhone plus battery pack into your pocket. As a portable power bank you might carry in a bag on your travels, but not your pocket.

Practically identical except for the lack of international plug adapters, the Raycon 5-in-1 Power Bank is also available in the U.S.

Another plug-in-the-wall power bank option is the Infinacore P3 Pro, pictured above, which costs $129 / £102, and can charge four devices at the same time, including an iPhone at 15W Qi2. It lacks the integrated USB-C cable found on the Statik and Raycon power bank chargers but as it plugs directly into a wall power socket you won’t need to carry a cable to recharge the power bank itself. Like the Statik battery pack, it comes with U.K., E.U, and AU/NZ travel adapter plug heads. As well as the Qi2 charging pad, there are two USB-C ports and one USB-A. The P3 Pro also boasts an excellent display, showing charging speed, battery status, temperature, and charge time remaining. We recommend this power bank for MacBook users who want a portable 65W charger with MagSafe for wireless iPhone charging, plus USB options. The Statik and Raycon aren’t as suitable for laptop charging, but the P3 Pro’s 65W is enough to keep most MacBooks going when connected.

While a wireless charging pad saves you the bother of carrying a cable around to charge your phone from a power bank, you still need a wall charger to hand to recharge the power bank itself… but not with the PhoneSuit Journey Mag, which features foldable North American plug prongs so you can plug the battery pack straight into a power socket. While plugged in, the power bank can charge the attached iPhone wirelessly at the same time as recharging the battery pack.

Two further USB ports are also handy. The USB-C port can charge at 20W, so much faster than the 7.5W MagSafe-compatible wireless charging pad—but you will need a USB-C cable in this instance: USB-C to Lightning for iPhones older than the iPhone 15, and USB-C to USB-C for the 15, 16 and 17. The USB-A port can charge another device at up to 18W.

The 10000mAh battery capacity allowed us to charge a faded iPhone to 100% and then again another 50%, which is about average for this size battery.

5K battery packs are slim enough to clamp to your iPhone and still slip into your pocket. While 10000mAh power banks boast larger re-charging capacity, if you want a slightly smaller and lighter battery pack with a stand, we recommend you choose between this power bank—the smaller sibling of our recommended best 10K magnetic power bank—and either the Belkin BoostCharge Pro Power Bank 5K + Stand or Ugreen 5000mAh Magnetic Wireless Power Bank, both reviewed below.

All three have a 5000mAh battery but the Belkin won in our head-to-head recharging tests, recharging a faded iPhone 16 Pro by 79% compared to the 5K EcoFlow Rapid (70%) and Ugreen (68%). For the biggest recharge, Belkin wins.

Where the 5K EcoFlow Rapid gets the overall nod—especially for owners of the iPhone 15, 16 and 17—is its built-in USB-C cable. No other 5000mAh wireless power bank we have tested has the handy integrated cable. Several of our favorite 10K battery packs have built-in cables but this is the first 5K power bank to boast one. Even if you have an earlier Lightning iPhone, the integrated cable can be used to top up the power bank itself.

It features 15W Qi2 wireless charging when clamped to the back of an iPhone, and can be charged with a cable at a top 30W speed.

This 5K battery pack was the winner in our recharging tests, recharging a faded iPhone 16 Pro by 79% compared to 70% by the 5K EcoFlow Rapid and 68% for the Ugreen power bank. Only the Kuxiu S2 Solid-State power bank performed to this level.

The Belkin’s kickstand is easy to use and feels robust, and the battery pack itself is marginally smaller than the Ugreen. The $49.99 Torras MagStall Power Bank is a little slimmer but wider and boasts a stand/finger-grip, although recharges to a slightly lesser extent.

It features 15W Qi2 wireless charging when clamped to the back of an iPhone, and can be charged with a cable at 12W, which is not as speedy as some power banks that have 20W or even 30W USB-C ports.
