    Apple releases AirPort Software 3.4.1

    After numerous complaints from users about signal strength and dropped connections following the AirPort Software 3.4 update, Apple on Monday updated the software again, bringing it to version 3.4.1. According to notes provided with the update, AirPort Software 3.4.1 provides improved antenna output control; Enhanced logging from your base station which is compatible with syslog; and Performance improvements for WPA security implementations. The update is available via the Software Update control panel.

    Apple on Monday released an update to its AirPort wireless networking software. The new version, 3.4, is ready for download through the Software Update system preferences pane. New in this release are features for AirPort Extreme, including improved antenna output control, enhanced base station logging compatible with syslog, and performance improvements for WPA security implementations.

The new model — part #M9397LL/A — features support for Power over Ethernet and also conforms to a fire rating specification developed by Underwriters Laboratories (UL).     Wayport Inc. said McDonald's Corp. has selected the company as its exclusive nationwide public access Wi-Fi provider, which could lead to deployment of the world's largest Wi-Fi network. Dan Lowden, vice president of marketing at Austin-based Wayport, said his company expects to install Wi-Fi service in about 3,000 McDonald's restaurants this year and eventually plans to extend the service to "as many as possible" of the 13,000 McDonald's outlets in the U.S. during the course of the four-year contract.

    T-Mobile pushes int’l, ‘seamless’ Wi-Fi services

    International business travelers seeking wireless broadband connectivity on both sides of the Atlantic could benefit from a new service launched by the T-Mobile subsidiaries of Germany's Deutsche Telekom AG. The new Wi-Fi offering allows T-Mobile customers to access — with the same user name and password — more than 4,100 hotspots in the U.S. and another 700 in Austria, the Czech Republic, Germany, the Netherlands and the U.K., T-Mobile International AG & Co. KG said Tuesday at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes.

    Amtrak to offer Wi-Fi in six Northeast stations

    Amtrak and AT&T Wireless Services Inc. have inked a deal to put wireless Internet access in six of the railroad's stations along the Northeast Corridor. "Amtrak is excited to be able to offer our customers another way to meld their busy schedules and the work they need to get done," Sally Bellet, Amtrak vice president of real estate development, said in a statement. "Our arrangement with a proven wireless carrier such as AT&T Wireless is just the thing to help keep Amtrak travelers and station visitors connected to their e-mail and the Internet."

    City of Cerritos aims to be biggest U.S. Wi-Fi hotspot

    On Jan. 1, the Los Angeles suburb of Cerritos, Calif., will become the biggest Wi-Fi hotspot in the U.S., according to wireless Internet access company Aiirnet Wireless LLC. In the absence of complete DSL (digital subscriber line) or cable coverage, the city of Cerritos gave Aiirnet permission to use city property such as lamp posts and traffic lights to mount antennas and offer wireless broadband access to Cerritos' 50,000 residents, as well as businesses and the city itself, Aiirnet, of Woodland Hills, California, said in a statement Tuesday.
